A Crystal Moon.....The Storyline/Theme
Labyrinth is about a young, imaginative girl by the name of Sarah(Jennifer Connely). She lives in a fantasy world, loving to act, and having a love for a certain play called Labyrinth, which she has memorized except for one pesky line. She is a once-spoiled, fifteen year-old girl, now being raised by her father and step-mother, whom she dislikes. She seems immature at first, but through the movie, she matures, learning more about herself than she ever knew. She is independent and reliable.

The story begins as Sarah is acting her play in the park. A white owl perches nearby(supposedly the Goblin King). It suddenly starts raining, and Sarah begins running home with her dog Merlin. Sarah's mother scolds her because she is late to babysit the baby Toby, for her parents are going out for the evening. Sarah runs upstairs and begins reciting her lines again. As we look about her room, we see various things: a Hoggle statue, the Fieries, pictures of the Garden Maze and of the Labyrinth--almost everything that we'll see later in the movie appears in her room.

Sarah realizes Lancelot, her bear, is missing. She runs to the crying baby's room to retrieve it. Toby is crying, so Sarah begins telling Toby a story about how the Goblin King had fallen in love with a young girl named Sarah and given her the words to make goblins take her brother away. As she was leaving his room, she said "I wish the goblins would come and take you away--right now." -- Toby stopped crying; when she entered his room to look for him, Sarah came face to face with Jareth, the Goblin King(David Bowie).

He offers her her dreams in return for letting him keep the child, but Sarah refuses. Thus she begins her journey into the Labyrinth, meeting Hoggle. She then enters the maze, going towards the Castle. As she goes on she realizes things are not always what they seem in this place, mainly because a worm shows her a "secret passage". She goes on into the maze, trying to mark her way with lipsticks; but goblins change her marks. Sarah finally realizes this as she runs into a dead end, citing that famous line "This isn't fair!" as she comes face to face with the guards of two doors. Sarah solves the riddle of the two doors(supposedly) and walks through the first. Immediately she falls down; but hands on the sides of the walls try to help her. Instead of asking them to take her up, she tells them to take her down. Thus she is trapped in the oubliette.

Hoggle then comes to take her back to the beginning, but Sarah gives him a plastic bracelet in return for him taking her as far into the maze as he can. As they're walking along they run into Jareth, disguised as a begger. Hoggle tells Jareth he was leading Sarah back to the beginning and that he'd tricked her by saying he'd show her into the Labyrinth. Sarah, of course, is shocked.

Jareth asks Sarah how she's enjoying the labyrinth, she replies it's a peice of cake. So he speeds up the time by a few hours, and once again we hear "This isn't fair!" to which Jareth keenly replies "You say that so often. I wonder what your basis for comparison is." And he throws a crystal which turns into a mechanical slicing machine. She and Hoggle both run for their lives, escaping in the nick of time. She's then reluctant to trust Hoggle, who's trying to flee. Sarah steals the jewels he carries around, and Hoggle keeps following her into the Labyrinth. She's telling him he's a friend when they here a beast cry, and Hoggle runs away.

The beast turns out to be Ludo, who's being tortured by other goblins because he's big and dumb. Sarah rescues him and gets a new friend. She and he stumble upon the doorknockers. Sarah opens a door, which leads into a forest. Not far into the forest, Ludo disappears--to the bog of Eternal Stench. It is here that Sarah meets the fieries, who are WILD. She tries getting away by throwing htier heads..and then they try to take hers. She screams, and Hoggle begins to run to her rescue--but he is stopped by Jareth.

Jareth gives Hoggle a peach to give to Sarah. He tells him if Sarah ever kisses him he'll make him a prince: Prince of the Land of Stench! Hoggle rescues Sarah, and Sarah kisses him; thus, they both go headfirst into the bog of Eternal Stench, which SMELLS. It is here that they meet Sir Didymus, sworn by his life-blood not to let anyone cross his bridge without his permission! They try crossing, but Sir Didymus and Ludo fight, eventually declaring each other brothers. Then they recieve Sir Didymus' permission to cross, and Didymus becomes Sarah's friend. Ludo calls upon the rocks to make a "bridge" over the bog that they can use to escape.

Sarah is now very hungry. Hoggle reluctantly gives her the peach. Sarah eats it..but it tastes strange. Everything begins dancing, getting blurry. Crystals float around..which pictures in them: Sarah's music box with a dancing ballerina... Hoggle runs away; Sir Didymus and Ludo notice nothing and keep going without Sarah. Sarah faints, entering a dream world..where she is in a ball, dressed up very pretty. Jareth begins singing "As the World Falls Down"

Sarah sees Jareth dancing with women. Each time she sees him he has a different partner. He is watching her. There are women and men dancing around her, laughing at her. Jareth finally comes towards her. They begin dancing together. Both of them seem intriguied, in a daze. The people around them watch them dancing, quietly. But Sarah sees the clock and remembers she has to find Toby. She pulls away, grabs a chair, and breaks the bubble which she has been trapped in.

Sarah awakens in a junkyard, having forgottene verything. She meets the Junk Lady who begins giving her junk. The junk lady gives her things from her room: stuffed animals and other things. She guides Sarah into a place that looks like Sarah's room. Sarah thinks it's all a dream, that she's at home now. But she isn't. She has forgotten all about Toby, but eventually she remembers him. She hears Sir. Didymus and Ludo calling, and so she runs with them. They continue on their way to the castle, finally reaching the gates. They make it past the first gate undetected; the second gate comes alive, a robot operated by goblins. They think they're doomed, but Hoggle hears them from the junkyard and comes and saves them once more by hopping into the control station and getting rid of the goblins. THey enter the Goblin City.

Jareth has other things on his mind than Sarah; he thinks he no longer has to worry about her. Then he recieves word she's in the city. He sends out his army. There is a big battle, in which Sir Didymus, Ludo, Hoggle, and Sarah fight. Even the cowardly Ambrosius, Sir Didymus' mighty stead, a sheepdog resembling Merlin, fights. They defeat the army and make it to the castle. Sarah knows she must face Jareth alone, and she bids farewell to her friends, running up the stairs to face him.

She comes acorss a room with stairways on the walls and ceiling and floor, going every which direction. Gravity seems to be quite odd. Jareth is in this room, and so is Toby, playing with a crystal. Jareth sings "Within You" to a bewildered Sarah, as she tries to reach her baby brother. She gets close enuf to him where she thinks she can jump and reach him. She jumps off the stairs, and goes falling through space and time. The castle falls apart. Both she and Jareth land on a peice of debris from the castle.

Jareth begs Sarah to let him rule her, to love him, to obey him. But Sarah will not be ruled. She recites the lines from her favorite book, "Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child that you have stolen, for my will is as strong as yours and my kingdom is as great." She forgets the last line. Jareth offers her her dreams one last time, but Sarah remembers her line. "You have no power over me.." Jareth's face falls; he is defeated.

Jareth turns into a white owl again. Everything goes flying through space and time until Sarah appears on her bed. She hugs Lancelot, glad it's all over. Toby is back in his room again, fast asleep. She goes back to her room and sits at her dresser, looking in the mirror as she puts away Labyrinth probably forever. In her mirror, she sees all her friends she met in the Labyrinth. She tells them she needs them and they appear in her room. Then there is a jolly celebration party! A white owl, the Goblin King, perches outside the window, watching for a while, before sadly flying away.
